The Lady Cannoneers Start off Season 6-0
The Jefferson Volleyball teams wins the 2016 Jefferson Invitational and defeats Corning on Sunday to start season with a 6-0 record.
The Lady Cannoneers had a very successful start to their season with 6 wins over the weekend. The team hosted the 2016 Jefferson Invitational tournament on Saturday and started with a win against Mohawk Valley in 2 sets: 25-11 and 25-11. Next up was Finger Lakes who the girls also defeated in 2 sets: 26-24 and 25-13. Corning was the last team in pool play and JCC defeated them in 2 sets as well: 25-14 and 25-19. This put the Cannoneers in first place in their pool to crossover and play Cayuga. The team quickly defeated them in 2 sets: 25-12 and 25-21. Now Jefferson would advance to the finals to play Fulton Montgomery. The girls were able to capture the championship with a win in 2 sets against a very solid FM squad: 25-23 and 25-23. This gave the Lady Cannoneers a lot of confidence headed in to their first Mid State Athletic Conference match against Corning Community College on Sunday. The team knew the Lady Red Barons would be looking to even the score from Saturday and were able to hold off several runs by Corning to get their first conference win in 3 sets: 25-17, 25-21, and 25-21.
The returning core of sophomores led the way and helped the freshmen settle in to college volleyball. Alea Gentles had a big weekend at the net with 31 kills, 5 blocks, and 26 service points. Cassie Birth was solid throughout with 45 kills, 43 digs, and 27 service points. Jenna Scott led the defense with 46 digs and 30 service points while Chloe Stinebrickner finished with 124 assists, 26 digs, and 33 service points. Xanara Ruiz had a big first weekend and really stepped up to help the Cannoneers with 35 kills, 63 digs, and 49 service points while Hannah Rook chipped in 13 kills and 4 blocks. Meaghan LaClair finished with 7 kills, Paige Durdon had 15 digs, Mariah Corbett added 8 digs, and Dia MacKay ended with 2 digs.
