The Lady Cannoneers Come Home Victorious in the Mohawk Valley Community College Torchia Classic
The Jefferson Women's Basketball Team Wins the Mohawk Valley Community College Torchia Classic.
The Lady Cannoneers tipped of their season at The Torchia Classic this weekend at Mohawk Valley Community College. On Saturday The Lady Cannoneers faced Region III opponent Herkimer County Community College. Once the Lady Cannoneers found themselves with a good feel to the start of their first game, they consistently held a lead of double digits for a good portion of the contest. Jasmine Canady and Alyssa Crosby led the Cannoneers in scoring, while point guard Amanda Roberts led the charge for the Lady Cannoneers on the floor.
Sunday afternoon found The Lady Cannoneers facing the Nationally ranked 2nd team in the country and defending National Runners up Mohawk Valley Community College. In a back and forth contest the Lady Cannoneers found themselves up by as many as 9 points, and trailing as many as 9 points throughout the course of the game. Fighting back to a tie score with roughly 8 min left neither Mohawk Valley or Jefferson could pull away. Freshman forward Alyssa Crosby and Sophomore guard Jasmine Canady each hit crucial 3 point baskets in the last 2 min to keep the Cannoneers even. With 8 seconds on the game clock and possession of the basketball Amanda Roberts reversed the basketball to Alyssa Crosby as she drove to the basket making a contested layup to put the Cannoneers up by 1. After a Mohawk Valley timeout, Jefferson forced a contested 19 foot jump shot as time expired that rimmed out. The Lady Cannoneers started of the season with a bang, notching two big Region III wins on the road against two teams placed in the top 5 pre-season regional ranking! Alyssa Crosby led The Cannoneers in scoring with 25 points, while Amanda Roberts notched 15 points and 6 assists. Jasmine Canady, and Alyssa Crosby were voted to the All-Tournament Team.
