Jefferson loses close one to St. John Fisher.
In a thrilling UNYCHL semifinal matchup on Saturday, Jefferson Community College came up just short in a 6–5 loss to St. John Fisher, ending the Cannoneers' postseason run in dramatic fashion.
St. John Fisher opened the scoring early with a goal from Garrett Eisenhut, but JCC responded with resilience. In the closing minutes of the first period, Owen Bismarck struck shorthanded to tie the game, and Captain Cameron Winebar followed with another shorthanded tally to send the Cannoneers into the intermission leading 2–1.
JCC extended its momentum early in the second period when Dylan Johnson buried a power‑play goal off a feed from Tyler Sovie, giving the Cannoneers a 3–1 advantage. But Fisher stormed back. Mateo Torres cut the lead to one with a power‑play goal, and two quick strikes from Jonah Reashor flipped the score, sending St. John Fisher into the second intermission ahead 4–3.
The back‑and‑forth battle continued into the third. Bismarck netted his second of the night to tie the game at 4–4, but Torres answered midway through the period to restore Fisher's lead. JCC refused to go away—Sovie weaved through the Cardinals' defense coast‑to‑coast to knot the game once again at 5–5.
Just when overtime seemed inevitable, heartbreak struck. With only three seconds remaining, Reashor completed his hat trick, lifting St. John Fisher to a 6–5 victory and punching their ticket to the championship game.
Despite the loss, the Cannoneers delivered one of their most spirited performances of the season, showcasing grit, speed, and determination in a semifinal that will be remembered for its intensity and drama.
