Erie Pulls Away Late to Defeat Jefferson 7–5 in High Energy Sunday Matchup
Jefferson Falls to Erie
CHEEKTOWAGA — A packed crowd at the Cheektowaga Recreation Center was treated to one of the most fast paced games of the season Sunday afternoon, as Erie Community College outlasted Jefferson Community College in a 7–5 thriller that featured momentum swings, highlight reel scoring, and strong pushes from both benches.
Jefferson struck first late in the opening period when Dylan Johnson created his own opportunity, jumping on a loose puck and firing home an unassisted goal to give the Cannoneers a 1–0 lead. The advantage didn't last long. Erie responded with sustained pressure, capitalizing on a pair of quick chances to pull even. By the time the horn sounded, the teams were locked in a 2–2 tie, setting the tone for what would become a wide open offensive battle.
The second period delivered even more fireworks. Jefferson's Mason Savage took over stretches of the frame, scoring twice — once on a clean finish off a rush and again on a rebound he buried from the slot. Johnson added his second of the night, and Owen Bismarck chipped in with a timely goal of his own, helping Jefferson keep pace in a period where neither side could hold momentum for long. Erie answered each punch, matching Jefferson goal for goal and sending the game into the third period deadlocked at 5–5.
With the game up for grabs, Erie found another gear in the final frame. Jack Feneziani broke the tie with a sharp finish that swung the energy back to the Kats' bench. Jefferson pushed hard for an equalizer, generating several quality looks, but Erie's defense tightened and goaltending held firm when it mattered most. Mac Ward then delivered the dagger, scoring a late empty net insurance goal that gave the Kats the breathing room they needed to close out the win.
Despite the loss, Jefferson showcased plenty of offensive firepower and resilience, battling through a fast tempo and answering Erie's pressure for most of the afternoon. The matchup had all the intensity of a pre playoff showdown, and both teams left the ice knowing they had been pushed to their limits.
Erie's late surge proved to be the difference, but Jefferson's strong showing suggests the Cannoneers will remain a tough opponent as the playoffs approach.
