JCC Hockey Alumni Game Launches a New Tradition at Watertown Arena
JCC Hockey starts a new tradition by holding their first Alumni Game.
On Sunday, December 13th, the Watertown Municipal Arena was alive with energy as the Jefferson Community College Alumni hockey team returned to the ice for a special matchup against the current JCC 2025 squad. The inaugural Alumni Game, organized by JCC Hockey Alumni Chairman Owen Newton, is poised to become a lasting tradition—one still young but already rich in meaning—while showcasing the bright future of Jefferson hockey.
The evening began with a ceremonial faceoff dropped by President Dan Dupee, a symbolic gesture honoring the legacy of the program and the countless players, coaches, and families who have contributed to its growth. The stands were filled with parents, friends, and supporters, all brought together by a shared love of the game. Their presence, along with the tireless work of volunteers, created an atmosphere that was both festive and deeply meaningful. From the opening puck drop to the final whistle, the event captured the spirit of Jefferson Hockey—competitive, spirited, and rooted in community.
The JCC Alumni, coached by James "Obie" O'Brien, featured a roster of familiar names and seasoned talent. Goaltenders Mason Patnode (#45) and Cole James (#1) anchored the net, while defensemen Carson Barrett (#6), Tyler Wilson (#48), Casey Wilson (#13), and Josh VanBrocklin (#71) provided stability on the blue line. Up front, the alumni forwards included Owen Newton (#14), David Stern (#11), Jack Mills (#17), Cam Winebar (#9), Lenny Dormio (#15), Bailey Dalin (#22), Kyle Gionet (#18), Zach Blevins (#8), and Ryan Blevins (#19). Their experience was evident throughout the contest, as they worked together to generate scoring chances and keep pace with the younger squad.
Facing them was the JCC 2025 team, guided by Coach John "Rich" Gamble. Their lineup showcased the next generation of Jefferson hockey, with goalies Darius Groat (#32) and Brodie MacGregor (#45) in net. Defense was handled by Evan Sanford (#7), Daniel Keegan (#48), Nate Van Wie (#15), and Kellan Duffy (#11). The forward corps included Mason Jeeves (#18), Drew Blevins (#88), Tanner Esposito (#16), Owen Ebersol (#14), Owen VanBroklin (#10), Owen Bismarck (#19), Caden Perini (#27), Tyler Sovie (#13), Mason Savage (#71), Colin Whitmore (#8), Charlie Gorman (#17), and Connor Lamb (#23). With speed, depth, and youthful energy, the 2025 team demonstrated the program's bright future.
The alumni team struck with two quick goals midway through the first to make things tight, with Zach Blevins scoring at 6:49 of the first period, assisted by Casey Wilson. Just seconds later, Owen Newton added another tally. Before the period ended, Jack Mills found the back of the net with help from Bailey Dalin. In the second period, Tyler Wilson scored off a feed from Ryan Blevins, and Kyle Gionet capped the alumni scoring with an assist from Blevins.
The JCC 2025 squad responded with speed and depth, ultimately netting eleven goals across three periods. Highlights included goals from Owen Bismarck, Caden Perini, Kellan Duffy, Tanner Esposito, and Tyler Sovie, with assists spread across the roster. Their offensive chemistry was evident, as players like Connor Lamb and Mason Jeeves consistently set up scoring opportunities. A few penalties added intensity to the contest, with roughing and tripping calls against both sides. Alumni players Dormio, Wilson, and Dalin each served time, while JCC 2025's Bismarck was whistled for roughing.
While the scoreboard reflected the competitive spirit of both teams, the true victory was the sense of community on display. The event was made possible by the dedication of volunteers, whose behind-the-scenes efforts ensured a smooth and memorable evening. The alumni game is more than the beginning of a great tradition—it is a reminder of the enduring bond between Jefferson Community College and the community. As the final buzzer sounded, players and fans alike left with a renewed appreciation for the program's past, present, and future, and with anticipation for the years of alumni hockey still to come.
