Cannoneers Rally Past St. John Fisher for Thrilling 5–3 Victory
Jefferson Hockey Rally's past St. John Fisher
In their second matchup of the season, the JCC Cannoneers took the ice with confidence following their opening win against Hobart. This time, they faced off against St. John Fisher—a team that had beat them in a scrimmage late last season. With redemption on their minds and momentum on their side, the Cannoneers delivered a gutsy performance that ended in a 5–3 comeback win.
The first period was a chess match, with both teams trading chances and showcasing disciplined defensive play. It looked destined to end scoreless until the final seconds, when the Cardinals capitalized on an odd-man rush to take a 1–0 lead with just 21 ticks left on the clock. It was a tough break, but the Cannoneers didn't flinch.
The second period mirrored the first in intensity. St. John Fisher struck again early, this time with a slick shot from the blue line that made it 2–0. But JCC wasn't going quietly. Freshman Tyler Sovie stepped up with a beautiful wrist shot to put the Cannoneers on the board, assisted by Mason Savage. That late-period goal injected life into the bench and set the stage for a dramatic third.
And what a third period it was. Just over a minute in, captain Cameron Winebar buried the equalizer off a crisp feed from assistant captain Owen Bismarck and Mason Jeeves. The crowd erupted—and so did the Cannoneers' offense. Moments later, Mason Savage found the back of the net to give JCC its first lead of the game, 3–2.
With momentum surging, freshman Dylan Johnson broke free on a breakaway and made no mistake, extending the lead to 4–2. The Cardinals clawed one back on a power play to make it 4–3, but JCC held firm. In the final minute, with the Cardinals' net empty, Winebar struck again—his second of the game—to seal the win and send a message: this team knows how to finish.
It was a gritty, emotional, and well-earned victory that showcased the depth, leadership, and resilience of the Cannoneers. With two wins to open the season, the foundation is strong—and the battle is just beginning.
